Excelero Honored With Flash Memory Summit 2019 Best of Show Award for Third Year in a Row

2019 Most Innovative Technology Award honors the NVMesh2 SmartNIC-enabled client-free shared NVMe that avoids taxing CPUs, makes storage software OS-agnostic

SANTA CLARA, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Excelero, a disruptor in software-defined block storage, today announced that its NVMesh2 software-defined block storage and its SmartNIC-enabled client-free shared NVMe capability was honored with a Flash Memory Summit 2019 Best of Show Award for the Most Innovative Flash Memory Technology of the year. The award represents the third year in a row that Excelero has received a FMS Best in Show award.

The Most Innovative Flash Memory Technology category awards innovations that will change the way flash memory works and is used in products. Recipients enjoy significant differentiation of their intellectual property and patents – differentiation that is bringing innovation to the marketplace.

Excelero’s NVMesh2 SmartNIC-enabled client-free shared NVMe capability is made possible by a US patent awarded to Excelero in March 2019 for a technique of multiple remote storage devices communicating with a SmartNIC. The approach is an industry first for both a SmartNIC offloading an entire storage application, and a client-free shared NVMe implementation. The SmartNIC offload avoids taxing CPU resources when building scale-out NVMe architectures, so storage software doesn’t diminish CPU efficiency and resources remain available for the intensive I/O needed in AI, ML, analytics applications.

In addition, Excelero’s SmartNIC offload capability allows storage software to be OS-agnostic, freeing IT teams from installing client-side drivers and running automatically on any OS supporting NVMe, including Windows, proprietary and non-standard Linux distributions, MacOS, VMware, other enterprise platforms. This allows a broader range of operating systems and hypervisors to access NVMe as if it were local storage. To activate the client-free implementation feature and other SmartNIC offloading, clients also need to run virtualization software specific to a SmartNIC vendor’s offering – such as the Mellanox NVMe SNAP (emulation) storage virtualization software, debuted in March 2019. One other SmartNIC vendor is readying a debut of similar software-driven virtualization capability in fall 2019.

“Customers are looking for more efficient ways to deploy NVMe Flash across an enterprise and a way to address intensive I/O applications,” said Jay Kramer, Chairman of the Awards Program and President of Network Storage Advisors Inc. “We are proud to recognize Excelero’s SmartNIC delivering the superior performance and low latency of a composable NVMe infrastructure, while providing for essential storage services.”

“We’re tremendously honored to win our third FMS Best in Show award – this time, for fundamental technology that we believe is a game-changer for the entire storage industry,” said Lior Gal, CEO and co-founder of Excelero. “As SmartNICs deployments accelerate, our pioneering SmartNIC offload approach also can be applied to help accelerate not just our own NVMesh2 software as it does now, but also an NVMeoF solution from any vendor.”
