Continental Showcases Technology ‘From Concrete to Cloud’ at ITS America 2021

AUBURN HILLS, Mich.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–#150YearsofContinental–Continental will display technology innovations from the concrete to the cloud at the ITS America 2021 Annual Meeting in Charlotte, North Carolina, which runs from December 7-10. The technology company will show how it is revolutionizing vehicles and infrastructure to encourage safety, innovation and an improved experience on the road.

“Continental is approaching the future of mobility from many angles,” said Tamara Snow, Head of Research & Advanced Engineering North America, Continental Automotive. “By exploring innovations from the concrete to the cloud, mobility is made safer and more efficient for all. Our technology here demonstrates how connecting vehicles and infrastructure improves the mobility experience.”

Wrong Way Driver Technology

Continental will offer a demo of its Wrong Way Driver system, which promotes safety by warning at-risk drivers about vehicles traveling the wrong way. Early alerts about a wrong-way driver’s location, speed and direction of travel allow drivers to take proactive safety measures.

The technology relies on a combination of Continental sensors, connected-vehicle systems and a heat-mapping algorithm. It is a self-learning system that is packaged in roadside equipment to define the roadway and direction of travel.

The fully immersive demo puts users behind the wheel of a car in a scenario with a wrong way driver. Participants will experience the situation with and without the Continental technology in a driving simulation along I-75 in southeast Michigan. The demo takes place near the area where Continental recently installed its first field deployment of the Wrong Way Driver technology.

Intelligent Intersection

An Augmented Reality (AR) 3D display will demonstrate some of the capabilities of Continental’s Intelligent Intersection. The technology connects vehicles to smart infrastructure via V2X to work together for everyone’s safety. The smart infrastructure talks to vehicles to make sure a driver knows what is around every corner– a pedestrian, biker or another vehicle.

The AR display features an interactive 3D cityscape. Users pan across the cityscape with a tablet to see different situations play out at an intersection.

Continental will also be showcasing a new product, Vantage Fusion, with partner Iteris. Vantage Fusion is a hybrid video and radar detection system that delivers unmatched detection, tracking and classification accuracy of all road users — vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists. It uses information from automotive sensors to enable cooperative perception capabilities, which enables a vehicle to share its surroundings with the rest of the connected environment. The technology also allows V2X information to be shared between the infrastructure and connected vehicles to improve the safety of both vehicles and vulnerable road users.

LiDAR Technology Portfolio

Continental’s leading LiDAR portfolio will also be on display. The precision sensing technology is a must for enabling the future of mobility, including autonomous and assisted driving features. Attendees will see how Continental’s short-range and long-range LiDAR systems work together to create a live map of the show floor.

The HFL118 solid-state 3D Flash LiDAR sensor offers a surround view of a vehicle by gathering environmental data up to 50 meters, making it essential for advanced levels of automation in dense urban and highway environments.

The HRL131 long-range LiDAR enables higher levels of automation. It is a Microelectromechanical System-based (MEMS) agile LiDAR for passenger cars developed with partner AEye. Vehicles can be detected at a distance of more than 300 meters and pedestrians at more than 200 meters.

ContiConnect Live

Continental will display ContiConnect Live – a technology that improves fleet management by gathering data from tires to offer innovative, real-time monitoring. The cloud-based system offers over-the-road live monitoring across an entire fleet.

Attendees will walk through the user interface to experience how ContiConnect Live would work in a typical fleet. For real-time monitoring, tire sensors send data to a connected device in the vehicle, which then transmits to the cloud. This gives a fleet full visibility on its tire status and tire history in the ContiConnect portal.

Tire monitoring is also available through Continental’s yard-based solution, which will also be on display.

Digital Services Platform

Continental Engineering Services will show how it is making mobility a service with the Digital Services Platform. The end-to-end solution makes vehicles ready for sharing and fleet use. Continental offers customers the complete suite of needs with the technology, including hardware and software services.

The platform can be customized for different functions to manage a fleet, such as vehicle monitoring and diagnostics, payment and driver license verification, and software updates.

Conference Program

Members of Continental’s management team will also participate in a series of panels at the conference:

  • Jon Stone, Head of Program Management, Research & Advanced Engineering, Holistic Engineering and Technologies North America, will participate in a discussion on Safety Message Brokering: Ensuring Data Compatibility Across Boundaries.
  • Kent Young, Head of Electronic Chassis & Components, North America, will be on a panel to discuss 20/20 Vision: Deploying Smart Intersections for Safe Mobility.
